Insert Quarter, Improve Billiards Stroke

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

A lot of players are plagued with a “Chicken Wing” stroke that ruins their shot making ability by thrusting the elbow of their grip hand out awayfrom their body.

The result is coming through the cue ball out of alignment with the target line and as a result, to sink the ball, they train themselves to correct for having shoulder and elbow out of precise alignment.

I recently read an article about Vijay Singh’s Record Breaking golf season that credited his Routine practrice routine that among other things involves the placement of a golf glove in his armpit. This way he maintains proper arm/body connection throughout the swing.

There are a lot of similarities between golf and billiards and Vijay’s routine got me to thinking about a proper billiards stroke.

To be in alignment, the upper arm, at least just below the armpit, needs to be immediately adjacent to the upper chest. That puts the shoulder, the elbow and the wrist on a plane with the back leg and the target line. Here’s a use for that billiards glove I discarded months ago.

Doesn’t work, a glove in this instance will not fall because in a deffective billiards stroke, even with a chicken wing, doesn’t allow enough clearance for the glove to slip out of place.

How about a chalk cube? Same thing, only it is a little more irritating.

A quarter? Works fine and if you get your upper arm a little out of alignment, you’ll be tracking the quarter across the floor.

But I wanted to be sure. No one told me the skin of the upper arm should be touching the upper chest to deliver a good stroke, but I did have a test bed for such a theory.

Doug Carter’s Stroke Trainer, when used properly, will train the muscle memory in your stroke arm, hand and wrist all at one time.

So I set up the Stroke Trainer, just to test the feeling. Sure enough, there is a tightness between the upper arm and chest when I am properly set up with the Stroke Trainer.

If you can hold a quarter in your armpit throughout the stroke (backswing through follow through) you will be amazed at your increased accuracy on long shots.

Feels awkward. Damn right, but if you use this little gem while you are practicing and do it repeatedly, you will groove your stroke.

The Facts Need To Know About Swimming Pool Heaters

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

If you been considering getting a heater for your swimming pool to help extend the swimming season, you probably have a lot of questions that you would like to have answered. So here are some facts about swimming pool heaters that you really need to know.

First of all, a heater will help you set your water temperature at almost any comfort level possible. Most experts recommend around 78 for swimming pool water to be the most comfortable, but many folks actually prefer warmer water, even 80 or more.

Since the sun can only heat your pool water to 78 for a very short time during the year, a pool heater will enable you to dramatically expand the swimming season each year. For those that live in northern climates, it may actually be able to almost double the season, and for those in slightly warmer climates, it can even triple the swimming season.

Using a pool cover is highly recommended even with a swimming pool heater, because it helps prevent heat loss from the pool water to the air, and holds it in instead. In fact a good insulating pool cover can reduce heat loss by 50% or even more.

So what types of swimming pool heaters are available? Perhaps the most common is the gas-fired heater that uses LP gas. This kind of heater generally is less expensive to begin with, and the cost of using it tends to be less than other heaters as well. Another type of pool heater is the oil fired heater. These can be used in areas where LP gas is not generally available. And some pool heaters run on electricity, but these tend to be the most expensive of all to buy and maintain.

Finally, there is the solar pool heater to consider. Initially, it sounds like a great way to save money when you use the sun’s energy for free. However, there are drawbacks to using solar pool heaters too, the first of which is their initial cost. Swimming pool solar heaters can cost as much as 25% to 50% of the cost of the entire swimming pool, making them easily the most expensive swimming pool heaters to buy. But they also take up quite a bit of room too. In fact, the general rule of thumb is that the solar collection area should equal the surface area of the pool that it is heating. Many pool owners do not have an open area sufficient for solar collectors of that size. And finally, a swimming pool solar heater requires a larger electric swimming pool pump to deliver the pool water to the solar panels, adding even more to the overall expense.

Most gas-fired heaters on the other hand cost only a bout 6% to 10% of the cost of your swimming pool to install, making them a much less expensive alternative for swimming pool heating.

Hopefully, this article will help you understand more about the choices that you have available for swimming pool heaters, and what you can expect from each type of heater that is on the market.

Swimming Pools – Let’s Get Wet

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

“Beverly Hills. Swimming pools. Movie stars.”

That line from the theme song of the 70’s sitcom “The Beverly Hillbillies” shows us how far we have come in relation to swimming pools. Swimming pools were a real status symbol back then. Now nearly everyone has access to at least one, if not in their own backyard, at least at the local YMCA or gym.

We take swimming pools for granted. If you are reading this article on the internet, you probably have a lifestyle that would admit you to not just one, but any of several swimming pools almost any time you’d like. Either your apartment complex has one or your friend does or you go to the local city pool. What a luxury!

It wasn’t so long ago when running water alone was a luxury for only the very rich. Now we build concrete lined holes in the ground and swim around in it!

Did you ever read “Stranger in a Strange Land?” or “Dune?” In Heinlein’s classic science fiction novel, “Stranger in a Strange Land,” the Martian, Mike, is just blown away by the fact that people swim in water. He loves it. Frank Herbert’s “Dune” is the story of a desert planet so dry that even perspiration is recycled through a suit that everyone must wear. To collect water in a pool is an unthinkable decadence.

But in our swimming pools, be they backyard or public, we filter the water, we chlorinate it to prevent algae and we clean the pool weekly or more to keep it clear and sparkling. That’s a far cry from the country watering hole or stream where you didn’t know what you’d find swimming next to you. Yes, those old-fashioned swimming holes have their charm, but I’ll take my sparkly clean water any day, thank you!

Tiger Woods Golf Swing

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Tiger Woods golf swing is one that creates a lot of power and sometimes gets him into trouble. Without a doubt…being the number one golfer in the world, his Tigers golf swing is pretty good wouldn’t you say?

What is the KEY to achieving a similar swing to Tigers?

There is a couple of things right off the top that any golfer no matter age or ability can accomplish given a little bit of “off the course” training on your body!

Rotate with your body.
Tiger does this with the strength of his core. By developing a stronger core from a rotational standpoint, you will add many yards to your drives. A term for this is “staying-connected” throughout the golf swing.

Tiger always fights his lower body getting way ahead of his upper body during the downswing (getting “stuck”), so he tries to keep his arms and club in front of his chest for as long as he can. This promotes a better sequence for the downswing, which puts him at impact in a very powerful position.

There are many drills you can do to achieve this body rotation. Sticking a towel under both armpits while you swing a wedge is one way. If the towel drops, your arms have become disconnected from your body.

Swing through to a full finish.
You’ll notice on most of Tigers shots he is fully rotated in the finish position. Only when he is hitting a punch or knock-down shot does he not have a full finish. This is an indicator Tiger is swinging through the ball, not just hitting at it.

When you focus on swinging through the ball, you’ll find your distance will increase, as well as your fairways hit off the tee. For most of us amateurs, the “hit” instinct is something we fight all the time.

It’s so easy to say we all can’t have Tiger Woods golf swing and that is partly true. But applying the above two movements to your swing will do wonders.

The only thing left is working on your body “off the course”.

Golf is no longer viewed as just a leisure game. It is an athletic movement that demands a higher level of conditioning specific to golf if you want to play your best!

So don’t try to copy it, but think about the common parts you can do…and you’ll at least look like you have Tiger Woods golf swing!

Lionel Messi – Player Focus

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

Another off the Argentine assembly line of “New Maradonas”, Lionel Messi may be the first to live up to that unfair comparison. Where Javier Saviola, Juan Roman Riquelme and Pablo Aimar have unsurprisingly failed to match HIS high standards despite initial promise, Messi has shown that even at a young age he is able to carry the weight of expectant teammates and a nation on his shoulders.

Credit must also be given to his Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard for not rushing him into a starting place at Barcelona he is more than ready to hold.

“It is clear Messi is a talent, a future player, but I ask that everyone continues supporting him when he is out of the team because he is still very young.” Rijkaard said in a recent interview. He continued:

“I’m convinced about him because I know he isn’t paying attention to all the speculation in the media.”He prefers to do his talking on the pitch.”

In fact his three goals and one assist in nine league starts for Barcelona this season to add to his goal and assist in the UEFA Champions League back up his coaches claim, and at 18 years young we are only just starting to see glimpses of his enormous potential. Messi states:

“I want to keep on learning and I hope things go well for me. The thing is to help the team as much as possible.”

These are the words of a young man with a focused head on his shoulders and more importantly good advisors around him. How many times have we seen the vultures swoop in on young prodigies sweet talking them and their parents into committing career suicide by sulking and demanding more playing time only to become no more than a trivia question five years down the road.

With the World Cup in Germany swiftly approaching Lionel Messi will definitely be one to watch if selected for national duty.

Enrique Domnguez, Messi’s former coach said “He could do things with the ball that defied the laws of physics. The only other person I have ever seen do that was Diego Maradona”.

Let us all recall that Maradona himself did not come into his own until the 1986 World Cup in Mexico despite being tipped for great things in Spain four years prior. That World Cup was a general disappointment for Maradona as well as Argentina. Messi will be three years younger than Maradona was in his first World Cup appearance and it is important that we all allow Lionel to continue developing at his current pace without placing on him too much pressure for a teenager to handle. For his part Messi must maintain his enthusiasm and work ethic that has so far impressed his coaches and peers. If he can do that then the sky is indeed his limit.

Does Heel Pain Mean that I Need to Stop Running?

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Heel pain, medically termed plantar fasciitis, is a common and frustrating injury for many runners. It accounts for up to 10% of all running injuries and results from overstressing the band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes. If you suffer from plantar fasciitis, you probably experience sharp pain in your heel not only after running, but also with the first steps in the morning or after long periods of sitting or being on your feet.

• The most common causes of plantar fasciitis in runners include:

• Sudden increases in mileage or training intensity

• Wearing running shoes that do not provide enough support or shock absorption.

• Running on inconsistent surfaces

• Tight hamstring and calf muscles

• High or low arches

If you are an avid runner, the last thing that you want to hear from the doctor is “stop running.” However, running through heel pain often lengthens the recovery time and usually makes the condition worse. Studies show that you need to address the problem immediately, as the longer you wait to treat plantar fasciitis, the harder it is to resolve.

The good news is that you may not have to completely stop running or exercising to treat your heel pain. Many people can adopt a program that sports medicine doctors call “relative rest.” This means cross training and reducing your running mileage to the point where you do not feel pain when you run. A good idea for cross training is to try swimming or running in a pool to maintain fitness but reduce the amount of stress put on your feet. Biking is another good option. When you run, you can reduce the stress on your feet by alternating between running and walking. You can increase your mileage slowly over time, but stop running at any time if you feel pain in your heel.

In addition to “relative rest,” you need to take special care of your feet at home to treat plantar fasciitis. If you take care of yourself, the pain will usually go away. The May 2004 New England Journal of Medicine reported that plantar fasciitis symptoms will resolve in more than 80 percent of people within 12 months. It recommends that doctors treat plantar fasciitis patients with “patient-directed, low-risk, minimal-cost interventions” such as stretching and using arch supports.

“The first steps to relieving heel pain can be as simple as stretching your foot before getting out of bed in the morning, icing your foot regularly and wearing proper footwear,” says Jeffrey S. Peterson, M.A., M.D, Northern California Institute of Sports Medicine and advisor to Heeling Solutions, a company dedicated to helping people resolve heel pain. “Many people also require additional steps such as using orthotics in their shoes or wearing a supportive foot device at night called a night splint.”

How do you know if you have plantar fasciitis? Only a licensed medical professional can confirm your diagnosis. Seek out a practitioner who specializes in conditions of the foot and ankle, such as a podiatrist or orthopedist. You can also check out www.heelingsolutions.com for more information. The company sells a video that has a special section for runners and comprehensive information about the condition and recommended treatments.

Buying the Best Clubs for Beginners

Monday, April 13th, 2009

A new set of clubs for beginners is really not necessary; in fact the higher end clubs can be a hindrance on your game. Golf is unique in the fact that the sport requires a group of instruments, and equipment to play in full. Many sports like baseball or basketball just require a few items that are used by an entire team. Golf being an individual sport this aspect changes into a need for the right set of clubs.

Golf clubs are broken down into sets of complete or incomplete, as well as irons, woods, drivers, putters, wedges, and hybrids. Golf clubs can be purchased in any combination of the above, but typically for beginners it is good to start with the entire set. Also women’s clubs are sold as sets, but typically differ from men’s clubs in size. Golf clubs in sets typically come with a bag that has stands on it, so it can rest on itself while you are taking your shots. Also golf sets occasionally will come with tops for the heads, as well as towels, umbrellas, and even balls.

Golf club sets can be purchased at a number of places. In order of price, most expensive to least, you can buy clubs at a pro shop; this will be your most expensive option. You can also buy clubs at sporting good stores, or golf specialty stores. For those bargain shoppers you can purchase a full set of clubs at Wal Mart, or even your local thrift store. For the internet shopper’s eBay offers a great selection of new and used golf club sets.

The cost for a set of clubs can vary from less than $100 for an entire set, to over $10,000 for the high end clubs. Typically golfers can buy a decent set of clubs for $400 depending on where they are shopping. High end clubs are often bought in singles, thus making it more costly to purchase a set. One driver can cost over $1,000 at a local pro shop.

The term you get what you pay for isn’t true in the world of golf clubs. Unlike cars, or computers, typically golf clubs can be beneficial at a low cost. Further, many prefer cheaper clubs, or used clubs, because they offer a more standard weight and grip. Golf clubs are uniquely made out of several different materials, and can vary depending on a user’s preference. The cheaper clubs have a level feel to them, and don’t offer too much of any one element. If a beginner spends a large amount of money on an ultra light driver, it could be too light for them to learn the basics of their swing, this actually prohibiting them from learning the basics.

Overall it’s important to start off with a modest set of clubs until your game advances to levels that call for new clubs. Plus with all the money you save you can buy your significant other a set, and make a date at the course.
