In this spot, when you bet with an overpair and receive action, it’s hard to tell if your poker online opponent actually has the trips or full house, and slowplaying is so common it can be much akin to a situation where you are setting yourself up to be given a beat, or at least stolen from.

In this spot, even when you have AA or another big poker online pair, and you can’t imagine that your opponent has the trips, it is a tough duality when faced with a reraise: should I protect my hand, or should I give him credit for the unlikely? In many cases, with the situation of the 9 9 J above, there is a range of ways your opponent could be operating under. Is your opponent the kind who would raise your bet with just a jack here? Is he the kind that would just call with a 9 and let you continue to hang yourself? Though all of these stripes involve an amount of levity, in that the more you know about your opponent’s play the more you can assume, the final condition remains that when receiving action on a paired board where you don’t have at least trips, you might want to slow down.

The Art of War offers some sage advice about executing and reacting to an all-in bet when playing at the casino.

“To fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy’s resistance without fighting.” This is the ultimate goal of the all-in bet. It is best used in situation where you don’t want other players to call. It is a show of strength intended to make your opponents lay down their weapons rather than engage in battle.

When you are up against an all-in bet playing poker online, or even a just a large one from a big stack, then consider this advice: “Good experienced fighters of put themselves beyond the possibility of defeat, then wait for an opportunity to defeat the enemy.” In other words, fold when you don’t have the nuts. Put yourself out of harm’s way, and look for a better spot to risk your chips.

The Art of War has other good advice about taking into account your opponents’ weapons – the chips in poker — when a big bet is made: “When equally matched, we can offer battle; if slightly inferior in numbers, we can avoid the enemy; if quite unequal in every way, we flee from him.” In other words, don’t put your chips at risk when a big stack is calling behind you unless you have the absolute nuts.

In the 1990s it seemed that pokern was dying, if not already dead. Casinos all over the place were shutting down their live poker rooms as video and online poker was taking the spotlight. But all that changed. About 8 years ago ESPN aired the first WSOP event, and that was, at least in the eyes of many industry analysts, the spark that brought the sport back.

Since that time, poker has become the world’s card game. It’s a little know fact that the World Series of Poker event has been around since the 1970s, but it wasn’t televised, and not really heavily advertised. Basically it was an exclusive thing. If you didn’t know about the circuit, well you didn’t really learn about it unless you frequented the casinos.

Before you knew it, it wasn’t even poker anymore, we all knew it as Texas Hold ‘Em. Then it happened. The amateur breakthrough in the form of Chris Moneymaker, that was the second dose of gasoline on the fire that was already starting to burn brighter again. And this brought with it the 10,000 dollar a seat competitive scene online. Instead of skipping the brick and mortars to play online, players were competing online in order to win seats at the live event. They call this the Moneymaker Effect in retrospect.

And from there, it’s as they say, the rest is history. The game became assessable to anyone with an internet connection and a passion to play. And interest combined with popularity is, as every economist knows, that thing we call popularity. Marketability even.
