Smith passes Payton, seizes all-time rushing record

December 30th, 2008 by Admin

IRVING, Texas–Emmitt Smith entered the NFL in 1990 labeled too small and too slow to be a star. Today he owns the league record for career rushing yards. With a fourth-quarter, 11-yard run versus the Seattle Seahawks–during his 193rd regular-season game–Smith passed Walter Payton’s total of 16,726 yards. And with Payton’s mother and brother in a Texas Stadium luxury box, Smith was sure to recognize what “Sweetness” meant to him and the league during an emotional postgame ceremony. “Today is a special day for me, my family and the Payton family,” he said. “Because without Payton doing what he did in the National Football League and representing all he represented, he wouldn’t have given a young man like myself a dream, something to shoot after and a person to look up to and try to emulate in every way possible.”

Soon after establishing the record, Smith capped the Cowboys’ drive with a one-yard touchdown run tying the score 14-14. And although Dallas would lose on a Seahawks field goal with 25 seconds to play, the score extended his NFL record for rushing touchdowns to 150. The 33-year-old Smith also set season highs with 24 carries and 109 yards rushing. During his speech, Smith thanked the people who helped him along the way. He also shared many of his favorite moments from his playing career as well as talked about his belief in himself. “I was counted out many times in my 13 years here, and I’m probably still counted out,” said Smith, who welled up when a banner was dropped from the rafters saluting him as the All Time Leading Rusher. “But I believe truly in my own ability. I believe my talent stacks up with the next man… I’m very confident I’m one of the best to ever play the game, but once you talk about the greatest, how can you define greatest?”

Aikido: Sensei Derek Eastman Biography - Part One

December 29th, 2008 by Admin

Interview with

Sensei Derek Eastman. 5th Dan.

By David J Wilson E.S.T.A. secretary. - July 2003.

I have known Sensei Eastman for some 12 years and during those years I have heard so many stories about both Sensei Eastman and Sensei Ellis and their dedication to the early promotion of UK Aikido, some of the history highlights their hard training and appreciation of a true martial art, yet there are many amusing anecdotes. Sensei Eastman is the only Aikido student from 1950’s “Hut ” dojo who has never given an interview stating that “Sensei Ellis’s story is more interesting than mine”. I asked Sensei Eastman to let the readers decide that on agreeing to this interview…

Introduction

Q -DW: Sensei Eastman , first I would like to thank you for agreeing to this interview.

A -SE: My pleasure David.

Q -DW: When were you born?

A -DE: I was a premature baby; I was born 20 years too soon on the 31st-12-1943.

Q -DW: Where were you born?

A -SE: West Kensington (behind Harrods) London.

Q -DW: Before your introduction to Aikido were you ever involved in any other sports.

A -SE: Yes, I was in the County school track and field team and would often run for my county school in various events.

Q -DW: Now the important question Sensei, What year did you start your Way in Aikido ?

A -SE: I made a brief start at the end of 1959. .

Q -DW: Where did you begin your long journey of Aikido?

A -SE: At the now Internationally famed “Hut” or as it later became the “Abbe School of Budo” It was actually called the “Abbe School of Judo” when I first joined.

First visit to the ” HUT” Dojo.

Q -DW: Would Judo have been your first introduction to martial arts on your first visit To the “Hut”?

A -SE: I vividly remember that first visit with a friend of mine, as we walked into the Hall no one noticed us as all eyes were focused on the action on the mat. There was a guy in the centre of the mat with a blindfold on who I later came to know as Sensei Harry Ellis. The blind folded student was being attacked by three other high grades, and believe me they were not messing around, in addition to three students attacking the blind folded student there was another guy who was obviously the top man here ( I later found out he was Sensei Williams). He was whacking the guy with a shinai (bamboo sword) shouting at him about his bad posture and not moving around fast enough. My friend turned to me and said ” Jeeezzz Del ! , I don’t want any of that, do you?, I’m out of here”. With that he left. Maybe I was not thinking straight but I stayed around and asked for some club information on beginners classes.

Q -DW: After witnessing that first insight into the martial arts, why didn’t you make the same wise move as your friend?

A -SE: I didn’t really know what I was watching, my first impression was that maybe it could be ju-jitsu or something like that, hmmm why did I stay? I am not sure, crazier still the question should be why did I sign up. I belonged to a motor cycle gang and I was the proud owner of a Royal Enfield 350cc. I was also too young to hold a driving license. In those days our favourite place was the historic town of Windsor, which was a great meeting place for motorcycle gangs/groups. The problem was the place was full of soldiers of the Castle guard. There were always fights with our guys and the soldiers of the Queens Household Cavalry who were a tough old bunch of lads. In one of these frequent battles I got really hammered by one of the Castle guards, I then decided to check out the local Judo school, that’s it!! I was in there and I joined there and then.

The Beginning of an Aikido Odyssey.

Q -DW: Sensei, tell me about your first class and who was your teacher?

A -SE: My first class was in Sensei Ellis’s Monday night beginners class, this was the biggest class of the week with between 40 to 50 students a night on the mat. Sensei Ellis’s class was always packed to overflowing, and the training was always hard, yet I enjoyed it and found that I seemed to fit in naturally to this new martial art of Aikido.

Q -DW: Sensei, you said at the beginning of this interview that ” I made a brief start in 1959″ what did you mean by a brief start?

A -SE: Well, what happened was, I had a very serious crash on my motorcycle and my injuries were severe. I was on crutches for three months. I made a slow but good recovery and eventually went back to Aikido. My teacher was still Sensei Ellis, I had only been back on the mat for about 4 or 5 lessons when one evening Sensei Ellis asked Sensei Williams to come on the mat and watch something. I soon realised that the something was me, and to my surprise Sensei Ellis was smashing me all over the mat, as he threw me I just kept bouncing back up. He then said to Sensei Williams; “Sensei, have you ever seen anyone ukemi like that before?” Sensei Williams then took me down in nikyo, a very painful wrist locking technique, he seemed to hold me down for a very long time before allowing me up. He looked at Sensei Ellis and said “He’s only a beginner give him time.” Sensei Ellis replied “You told me to take an assistant, that’s him!” Sensei Williams looked annoyed and sharply retorted “No! an assistant has to be 3rd kyu or higher” Sensei Ellis was persistent and eventually got his way, of course I was not involved in this discussion. As Sensei Williams walked away Sensei Ellis then asked me to be his assistant. He said I had a week to make up my mind, as I walked away Sensei Ellis said “Derek ! you don’t have a choice by the way, let me know at the end of class”. I become Sensei Ellis’s Assistant .

Q -DW: What were your responsibilities or duties as an assistant ?

A -SE: I was the only junior assistant at that time. I was also used by all the other instructors which was hard for me but also gave me a wider experience. I didn’t like being used by David Williams who was Sensei Ken Williams brother. David didn’t have the same understanding of Budo as his brother, and I always felt that he had a very cruel streak to his nature that went beyond strict discipline. It was also my responsibility to open the dojo on Sunday mornings ready for all the high grades. In the winter I would have to light three paraffin heaters, two of which were in the changing room. While they were warming up I would then sweep the frost off the tatami. I recall one winters Sunday morning I arrived early and a few minutes later Sensei Ellis arrived. He said ” Derek, you sweep the mat and I will light the fires for you” I was pleased about that, after a little while Sensei Ellis came out of the changing room shutting the door behind him and said ” keep that door shut Derek it will help to warm those damp gi’s” (training suits). Well, all the students and teachers left their gi’s hanging from the ceiling beams. It was freezing so Sensei and I started to practice to try to warm up, then about 30 min later John Caldwell and some students arrived. As they opened the changing room door the smoke just billowed out. Everyone was coughing and choking, we thought the place was on fire. It wasn’t a fire, but Sensei Ellis had not trimmed the heater wicks. This then caused the fire to billow out all the smoke and smuts, the gi’s were ruined. Sensei Williams then arrived and demanded to know who was responsible; he looked straight at Sensei Ellis who without a word looked at me and pointed his finger in my direction. After a few harsh words Sensei Williams made me do 200 press ups on the backs of my wrists as punishment. Some were demanding new gi’s and others wanted to take their own punishment. It was a while before I was forgiven.

Q -DW: It sounds tough being an assistant, surely there must have been some advantages to be had?

A -SE: As an assistant I did not have to pay a mat fee and trained almost every day. This was a big advantage as I was an apprentice engineer and did not earn much money. I also went on with the Judo and Karate classes. I also trained with Sensei Tomio Otani and I would be uke for all the dan grades at the HUT.

I Don’t Like Walking!

Q -DW: Were there any other assistants or were you the only one?

A-DE: For about 9 months I was the only one, and then Ken Waite became assistant to the Karate teachers. Harada Sensei was impressed with Ken and later made him his own personal assistant. Then a very young judoka called Trevor Jones joined the Aikido section, he was a most talented student with immense natural ability, he was soon promoted to junior assistant to Sensei K Williams and Trevor and I shared the dojo responsibilities together and we became very good friends. Trevor had a big problem , he had a bad habit of upsetting Sensei Ellis, and there were many times that Sensei had to sort him out and on several occasions when Trevor complained about Sensei Ellis’s driving. Sensei would stop the car and throw him out no matter where we were. He did drive too fast but I never complained as I don’t like walking.

Lady Baden Powell almost Faints.

Q -DW: I know Sensei Ellis and Sensei Foster travelled a great deal with Sensei Williams, did you get to travel and visit other dojos ?

A -SE: I did get to travel but not on the scale of Sensei Ellis and Williams. Sensei Williams had just made Sensei Ellis responsible for carrying out displays on his own and I took part in the first one at West Drayton. We did so many over the years yet there are two that are most memorable, I know this story is told in Sensei Ellis article in “Fighting Arts International” magazine. Abbe Sensei told us that this display was so very important as Lady Baden Powell and the Japanese ambassador were in the audience, and it was hoped that Lady Baden Powell would promote martial arts within her youth foundation groups internationally. Sensei Ellis was standing back stage near the Japanese ambassador and Sensei Otani when he thought that a Judo man had insulted Sensei Otani. There was an altercation between the Judo man and Sensei Ellis, I am not sure what happened out of site but the Judo man did not go on stage next as he should have. Suddenly we heard the announcement and introduction of ” Sensei Harry Ellis assistant National Coach” being called out. We rushed onto the stage and as I was thrown in the first technique my cigarettes and matches fell from the folds of my gi. Sensei went mad and immediately smashed me into, and around the mat. His aggression demanded a response, I also got angry and fought back, every attack was for real. I tried real hard to get him with the club without success. Then when it came to knife, I really thought I had him when the knife went deep into the folds of his gi. Sensei gasped but still took me down in immobilization, as he released me and I lifted my head off the mat Lady Baden Powell was looking straight at me with horror all over her face. I just knew there and then that we had blown it. Lady Baden Powell said to Abbe Sensei ” That was the most horrific display of violence I have ever witnessed, and not for my girls”.. So Much About META Tags!

December 28th, 2008 by Admin

I’ve written about META tags in the past, and I thought I’d help you expand your search engine optimization efforts and increase your web hits.

Rule #1: META tags always go in between the HEAD tags on your website.
Rule #2: NEVER include any line breaks in any META tag!

Most everyone knows the two basic META tags: keywords and description.

Keywords should be in a descending order of importance. Move your most important keywords to the front, and don’t repeat yourself (e.g. auto, parts, auto parts,Auto Parts). Keep the list short, to about 25 keywords. If you cater to more than one ethnic group of people, consider keywords in other languages. Lastly, eliminate spaces between the words. Make them “comma” instead of “comma space”.

Descriptions should also be kept short and to the point. Around 100-125 characters is about the max usable length. Make sure you use a few important keywords in your description, be informative but brief.

Web designers should include these tags as well:

These three tags may change if you are the owner of the company/website but not the creator. In that case, the first two lines would be about the company owner, while the third should be the creator or the creator’s web address.

For visiting robots, you may want to add this line:

Although most robots use the robots.txt file, Google in particular also pays attention to the third item - noarchive. This tells the search engine to index the page, but not to cache it. This comes in handy if you change your page often. Google will then always send the user to the latest version of the page, not one that it cached.

Latly, you may want to consider these two META tags for our wonderful Microsoft-controlled world:

The first turns off a feature in MS Internet Explorer which displays “smart tags”, or dynamic links, to your website. These links can actually send the user to your competition’s website. Not good!

The imagetoolbar tag prevents Internet Explorer 6+ users from swiping your custom-made graphics by disabling a toolbar. This toolbar is usually displayed by doing a right-click on a graphic and saving it to disk. While people can still swipe your graphics, at least they’ll have to go through a little trouble to get it. Hopefully its enough of a deterrant to keep them away.

Learn from the Pros on the LPGA Tour

December 25th, 2008 by Admin

Women who strength train on a regular basis, feel more confident and competent. Just look at some of the more experienced players on the LPGA tour. These women have dedicated their time to becoming physically fit and confident, both on and off the course.

Nancy Lopez, Julie Inkster, Annika Sorenstam, and many other women who’ve been on the LPGA for a number of years know it takes much more than their natural ability to create a good golf swing. Their physical and mental strength and stamina must be in good shape in order to meet the demands of hectic travel schedules combined with the expectations of top golf performance.

Just how do these LPGA players maintain their level of play and the consistency of quality stroke production?

One thing that the majority of these women do, that most women golfers don’t is the methods by which they condition their bodies. Most women golfers shy away from strength training. While some will do regular exercises, their concentration is not on strength; the one area where most women need much improvement. Many will spend time stretching and doing cardio routines, yet don’t spend quality time improving muscle strength, tone and function.

Strength training is strongly recommended for women golfer’s, no matter what their age or level of play. It’s even been proven that women in their 70’s can benefit by regularly performing strength training. Many women fear they’ll “bulk up” if they lift too many weights. It won’t happen. Women don’t have the hormones that men do. Women’s muscles will become more defined and powerful, but not bulky.

Regular strength training has great benefits to women golfers both on and off the course. By improving strength, the muscles are much more prepared for the demands of daily living. Not to mention the fact that you’ll have a more powerful and consistent golf swing.

Bringing in the Big Browns

December 25th, 2008 by Admin

Although the brown trout is widely distributed, it is
considered by many fly fishermen the ultimate challenge. This is
due mainly to its secrecy and unpredictability. These provide
constant challenges to anglers.

Brown trout can be found in
rivers and natural stillwaters. Time of day will factor into the
feeding pattern of this trout. Low light conditions will cause
the trout to seek shallows, margins and thin water. Harsh light
tends to drive it into undercut banks, deep pools and deeper
areas in lakes.

Also, look out for brown trout around
obstructions such as tree roots and fence lines. In addition,
the species tends to prefer drab, insect-oriented patterns. It
is wise to use smaller rather than bigger flies and pay
attention to presentations, using as fine a leader as possible.

Preferred Flies: For Spring Creek fishing use the
Flashback Pheasant Tail or Blue Dun (or Pale Blue Dun).
In the Freestone Stream, one can win with the Parachute
Hare’s Ear or the Bead Head Stonefly Black
. For Stillwater
fishing, the Mink Zonker proves very successful.

Fix Golf Slice - Add Yards To Your Drives

December 25th, 2008 by Admin

Fix golf slice is a thought on many amateur golfers’ minds. Studies reveal over 80% of all amateur golfers slice the ball. There have been more training aids, drills and tips to fix the golf slice that I can’t even begin to count.

If you hit a golf slice, have you taken lessons; bought any training aids, and done several drills only to still hit a slice? What a frustrating situation! Do you realize what’s causing your golf slice?

A golf slice is caused by the clubface coming across the ball from outside the target line, creating side-spin on the ball. Upon first thought, this may seem like a mechanical issue. And it is…but if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find it’s a ‘physical’ issue.

You see…your body dictates your ability to swing the club efficiently. If your body has ‘physical limitations’, your swing will not be mechanically sound and swing faults will appear.

In the golf swing there are many compensations for lack of proper mechanics. If you can’t make a 90 degree shoulder turn on the backswing, you’ll do whatever it takes to feel like you are making a full turn.

A good example of this would be to rotate your hips beyond the desired 45 degrees to enable your body to make a full backswing. What this does is rob you of power. You have no torque built up in your core to unleash into the ball at impact.

The same thing with a golf slice.

A golf slice is caused by the upper body getting ahead of the lower body, creating an “over-the-top” move, which in turn results in your clubface slashing across the ball and creating side-spin. Here comes the banana ball!

Your first inclination will be to take a lesson to fix this. If that doesn’t work, you might buy a training aid. If that doesn’t work you’ll buy an “offset” driver to help eliminate your golf slice.

Does this sound familiar?

Now the real answer! Take a break on your lessons. Don’t buy anymore training aids. And keep your normal driver in your bag.

You need to work on you core rotational flexibility to be able to initiate the downswing with your lower body first, to avoid the upper body getting ahead of it. It’s that simple. The minute your able to separate the upper and lower body upon initial move down…you’ll see that golf slice improve dramatically.

Doesn’t that make sense?

Along with fixing your golf slice, you’ll add up to 30 yards to your drives. You will get more roll when the ball lands from a draw ball flight. A golf slice is a weak shot that does not penetrate the air for maximum distance.

All of my programs, dvds, and books focus on core rotational strength and flexibility which will improve your power output and eliminate swing faults. You will not experience compensations on the golf course anymore.

When you work on your “machine”, your golf swing takes care of itself! You will finally eliminate the thought, “fix golf slice”.

Best Toys

December 24th, 2008 by Admin

When I was kid, I would spend so much time playing outside. I am really not too sure what has happed to kids all over rate country but, I hardly ever see kids playing outside anymore. It thinks that this is one of the main reasons for childhood obesity. Kids all over the world are getting fatter and fatter every day. We, as parents need to take immediate action now to save the lives of our kids. They are loosing their imaginations and resulting to warthog TV and playing video games every day as a way to stay entertained. This is just not good. Maybe we need to, as a county do something to stop this. Maybe certain ideas need to be in place to keep the kid outside. We need bigger yards so that they can play. Maybe we need more parks out there that are more kid friendly, hake concessions, and restrooms, so that is convent and nice to go to the park to play. I think that we need more sidewalks. As a parent, I know that I get worried every time my kid goes outside to play. How is she going to get to her friend house in the afternoon and early evening? If there is no sidewalks that just makes her have to walk on the side of the road. I don’t want there to do that, she might get hit. It needs to be easier for kids to go outside any play safely

Get Traffic Soon And Surge Ahead Or You’ll Get Lost In The I

December 24th, 2008 by Admin

Getting Traffic or more precisely Targeted Traffic to your website is the most important strategy for the Survival and Success of your Internet Home Based Business. It is a well known fact that the vast majority of the new Home Business Entrepreneurs have only a small marketing budget. Not that they are all short of funds but it takes time for them to be convinced about spending money. It is their desire and determination to cash in on the vast potential the Internet offers that has thrust them into this field of activity.

Follow these free, reliable methods and get the Traffic you desperately need to get noticed in the Internet. Some methods are time consuming and laborious but when money is the critical factor, time and labor should not be of major concern.

1. Reciprocal Linking.
Reciprocal linking is one of the most popular ways to get traffic to your Home Based Business site and also boost your rankings in the search engines. The strategy you should follow is: (a) Go to search engines such as Google, Yahoo or MSN and identify the websites that are similar or relevant to yours with high page ranks. (b)Eliminate those that are in direct competition to you. (c) Persuade and convince the webmasters to exchange links with you. (d) Identify quality websites i.e. websites with PR3 and over that have high traffic and exchange links with them.

2. Writing Articles.
One of the best ways to get high targeted traffic and one way links to your Home Business is to write articles and submit them to (a) Article Directories, (b) Ezine Publishers, and (c) High traffic websites that accept article submissions. Quality articles are in great demand and if you can write quality, thought provoking and educative articles in your field of expertise, your articles will definitely be accepted for publication. You should ensure that (a) you have a Resource Box at the bottom of the article. (b) And have your URL in the Resource Box. If your article is impressive you can expect a massive influx of visitors to your website via the resource box.

3. Submitting to Directories.
Once your website is ready with good content and quality links, you should start submitting your website to Search Engine Google and the Directories. Submitting to Directories is another way of getting additional targeted traffic to your website. This also increases your site’s overall importance to obtain a high page rank. If you want to be visible in the internet world, getting listed in Directories especially in Directories with high page rank and traffic is the fastest way to do it. Some charge a fee for listing while others are free. Among the free directories some insist on a link back from your site. Link back to them happily and get listed.

4. Posting at Forums.
Another great way of getting free traffic is to post at discussion forums on a regular basis. If your contributions at these forums display good knowledge and authority, an immediate increase in your website traffic will be seen. To get the maximum benefit, (a) visit high traffic forums, (b) display your knowledge and (c) include your signature file and URL there. It is this URL that will siphon traffic to your site.

5. Emails.
The emails that you send out, whether it is personal or business can be a source of traffic. You have to ensure that your advertisement or signature is there at the bottom of the page with your URL. Though it might not be much traffic, nevertheless it is free traffic. Make the best use of it.

6 Tell a friend/Refer a friend.
Another source of traffic which is often overlooked is through your own website. Place a “Tell a Friend” or “Refer a Friend” image or script on your website. This can be obtained free from several sources, by searching in the search engines. Visitors, who sincerely appreciate your site and are grateful for the information and the resources provided, will pass on the good news to their friends.

7. eBay Traffic.
Traffic from eBay is not the normal channel but it is working for many. Any traffic that is free is what you need most. So (a) register yourself with eBay,
(b) go to the “about me” page and fill in useful information with a link to your website. If done correctly, you are certain to get a significant amount of traffic since millions visit eBay every month.

8. Fresh Content.
It is surprising that many webmasters spend much time in finding various avenues to attract visitors to their sites but overlook the importance of adding fresh content to their sites. Content is King and Search Engines love fresh content. Your visitors love them too. It does not cost you anything so add fresh content regularly and they will keep on returning again and again.

Millions of websites are lost deep down in the Internet Wilderness unheard of and unsung. Certainly you don’t want to be one of those! Get started. Start making money from home by implementing your Internet Marketing program.

Baseball Tradition

December 23rd, 2008 by Admin

Baseball holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans. Regardless of the international appeal of the sport, the United States sees it as a favorite pastime. From street games of stickball or afternoons playing catch in the backyard to professional Minor Leagues and Major League Baseball, people of all ages love this sport.

Baseball comes in so many forms, aiming to please “children” of all ages. After all, what other career in the known universe pays a person to play a children’s game? Young children who are just beginning to build up hand-eye coordination and are learning to work and a team can sign up for Tee Ball, where the ball is set on a tee with an adjustable height to accommodate the player and no pitcher is present. There also is the the tethered baseball which you can hook up to a tree and hit it for hours. This allows a more older child to hit a ball in motion.

The basic rules of baseball can be learned early on, and children can start a hobby that will keep them healthy and out of trouble for years to come. Most kids join little leagues and families join in on the weekly events.

Peter Portero is a Baseball author.
